Heavier Trainees: Dips Are Already a Weighted Exercise

Pick up any beginner lifting guide and it will tell you dips are for lighter people. Wait until you drop some weight, it says. Build up your bench first. Come back when your joints are ready. I hear this a lot, and it misses something basic about how dips load the body.

  • Pull your shoulder blades down, not up toward your ears. The blade should feel anchored.
  • Stop the descent before the front of the shoulder collapses forward. That forward roll is where most strain happens.
  • Choose a grip width that keeps your wrists stacked over your elbows. Many heavier trainees find a narrower dip more comfortable because it shifts work to the triceps.
