The Dip's Shoulder Problem Is a Loading Problem

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn opened his first Turnplatz in Berlin in 1811. Parallel bars sat at the center of that outdoor training ground, right next to the climbing poles and vaulting horses. If the scapula locks down and the lifter drops until the tissue stops him, the anterior capsule and labrum take the stretch. Add a load plate and a vertical torso, and that stretch becomes the thing people blame on the dip.

The shoulder is not fragile. It is a shallow ball and socket joint that depends on movement and muscle control. The rotator cuff and the scapular muscles keep the joint centered while the big movers produce force. A good dip asks the anterior deltoid, the clavicular pec, and especially the triceps to drive the movement. The problem comes when the torso is vertical, the elbows flare wide, and the descent continues beyond the range the shoulder blade can follow. That combination is a bench press habit. The dip exposes it.

The Two Dip Shapes Most Lifters Blend Together

A gymnast on parallel bars rarely trains the dip as a heavy, low-rep grind. The gymnast uses the dip as one piece of a broader shoulder girdle system, with swinging, support holds, and pressing. The torso angle shifts from set to set. The shoulder blades stay active. The range is controlled. A lifter, by contrast, often sets the torso vertical, locks the shoulder blades down, and descends until the chest touches the hands. Those are two different movements sharing the same name.

The fix is to stop blending the two. If you want a strict strength movement for the chest and triceps, set a slight forward lean of 10 to 15 degrees. Let the elbows track back at a moderate angle, not straight out to the sides. If you want a more upright, triceps-dominant press, shorten the range and keep the shoulder blades moving with the arms.
