The Real Reason Your Wrists Hate Dips (And How to Fix It for Good)
I remember training with a guy named Mark a few years back. He was strong-former college athlete, desk job now, but still putting in work five days a week in his apartment. Dips were his go-to for chest and triceps. He'd knock out twenty like it was nothing.
But somewhere around rep eight, his wrists would start talking. By rep twelve, he was shaking them out between sets, wincing, adjusting his grip like he was trying to solve a puzzle. He tried everything: wrist wraps, mobility drills, changing hand positions, stretching his forearms till they felt like rubber bands.

Here's what happens: your hands lock onto parallel bars. As you lower, your wrists naturally extend-bend backward. The deeper you go, the more extension. For some people, that's fine. For others, it's a recipe for trouble.

Now ask yourself: was that station designed for your wrist anatomy? No. It was designed for an average person-which is a statistical fiction that fits almost nobody perfectly.

- Does it start immediately or after several reps? Immediate pain suggests a structural or alignment issue. Delayed pain (after rep 8 or 10) usually means fatigue: your muscles aren't supporting the joint, so the joint takes the load.
- How does it change when you adjust grip width? This is the big one. If narrowing your grip by two inches eliminates the pain, you've found your answer. If widening helps, same thing. If nothing changes, the issue may be coming from your shoulder or elbow.
Most people never ask question three. They assume the pain is their fault and try to push through. But your body isn't broken-it's just mismatched to the tool.
The Fix: Change the Tool, Not Yourself
I'll say something unpopular: we spend way too much time telling people to fix their bodies and not enough telling them to fix their equipment.
Yes, mobility and strengthening are important. Yes, proper form matters. But if your dip bars lock your wrists into an extended position your anatomy can't handle, no amount of prehab will fully solve it. You're fighting a structural mismatch with Band-Aids.
The real fix isn't just "get stronger wrists." It's: find a tool that allows your wrists to work in a neutral or near-neutral position.
That might mean rotating handles. It might mean parallel bars with adjustable width. It might mean doing dips on rings so your hands can rotate freely. It might mean using a freestanding pull-up bar that lets you set grip width exactly where it needs to be-without forcing your wrists into extension because the handles are fixed.
I'm not telling you to avoid dips. I'm telling you to change the tool. The goal isn't to protect your wrists forever. It's to keep training pain-free, consistently, without compromising quality.
What Actually Works (Backed by Research)
Here are three strategies that go beyond the typical advice:
Strategy 1: Screen your end-range stability. Get on all fours with palms flat. Lean forward until your wrists are at the same angle as the bottom of a dip. Can you hold that for 10 seconds without discomfort? If not, you need to either build stability there or reduce the angle with better equipment.
Strategy 2: Use the leverage test. Wrist joint torque increases significantly as your forearm angle goes past 90 degrees relative to the bar. In plain English: the deeper you dip, the more stress on your wrists. Find your pain-free depth. Don't force full depth just because "that's how dips are done."
Strategy 3: Periodize your grip. Alternate between dips that challenge your wrists (full depth, parallel bars) and variations that give them a break (ring dips, neutral grip, close-grip bench). Your wrists need recovery just like any other joint.
