How to Find Your Optimal Dip Bar Height

You don't need a lab. You need about five minutes and a willingness to experiment.

  1. Feet on the ground. Set the bar so that when you lift yourself up with straight arms, your feet are still on the floor with a slight bend in your knees. If you have to jump to reach the starting position, the bar is too high.
  2. Check your shoulders. At the top of the dip, your shoulders should be packed down-not shrugged toward your ears. If you feel tension in your traps, lower the bar.
