Dips Are a Climbing Superpower (And Why You're Missing Out)

Every climber I know owns a pull-up bar. Most have a hangboard. Many will talk your ear off about finger strength, lock-offs, and the perfect campus board routine.

But ask them when they last did a set of dips, and you'll get a blank stare. Maybe a grimace. "Dips? Those hurt my shoulders. Climbers don't need pushing."

That's the myth. And it's costing you sends.

I get it-it sounds contrarian. But the biomechanics of real climbing tell a different story. Dips aren't just okay for climbers. They're one of the most underutilized tools for building the strength, stability, and resilience that directly transfer to the wall. Let's break down why you've been avoiding them, why that's a mistake, and how to add them without wrecking your shoulders.

The Real Demand on the Wall

Climbing is a pulling sport-obviously. But that's only half the movement story. When you mantle a ledge, push off a sloper, or stabilize through a dynamic catch, your shoulders and triceps are working in a pushing pattern. The dip is the purest expression of that: full-range overhead pressing (or near-overhead, depending on depth) that builds triceps power, shoulder stability, and scapular control.

  • Triceps strength directly contributes to lock-off power. A dip loads the triceps in a stretched position, which transfers to pulling moves where you need to hold a bent arm.
