For Wider Shoulders, Stop Asking Dips to Do Lateral Raises
Type “dips for shoulder width” into Google and you’ll get a wave of articles all promising the same thing. Most of them skip the part where anatomy says no. Dips are a closed-chain press. They light up the chest, front delt, and triceps. The lateral deltoid, the muscle that gives shoulders their widest point, barely gets a look. Want that capped look? You need lateral raises and overhead pressing. But writing off dips entirely is a mistake. The Muscle That Actually Creates Width
The width you see under a t-shirt comes from two things you can’t do much about: your clavicle length and the lateral deltoid sitting on top of it. The lateral delt abducts the humerus, moving your arm out to the side. Dips flex and extend the shoulder. Your arm travels forward and back in the sagittal plane, not out sideways.

Most dip articles skip this part. Shoulder width is partly a posture problem. Rounded shoulders and a floating scapula hide width you already own. Dips, done with full range and a controlled tempo, force the shoulder blade to stay pinned while the rest of you moves around it. You learn to press with a depressed, stable scapula instead of hiking your traps up to your ears.
That carryover matters outside the workout. A stronger upper back and better scapular control pull the shoulders into a more open position during the day. The same measured shoulder width can look entirely different depending on whether the shoulder girdle sits tall or collapses forward. Dips train the muscles that hold the taller position.
How to Program Dips for the Frame Around Your Shoulders
Start with strict reps only. No bouncing out of the bottom. No kipping. Lower until your upper arm reaches at least parallel to the floor, or as deep as your shoulders allow without pain. Keep the shoulder blades anchored. Pause for a half-second at the bottom to kill the stretch reflex, then press to full elbow extension at the top.
A simple two-day split looks like this:
- Day one: Weighted dips, 4 sets of 6-8 strict reps, then dumbbell lateral raises, 3 sets of 12-15.
- Day two: Bodyweight dips, 3 sets of near-max reps with a 2-second pause at the bottom, then overhead pressing, 4 sets of 6-8.
Add external load only after you can hit 3 clean sets of 12 strict reps with full range. The lateral raise work is non-negotiable if shoulder width is the goal. Dips build the front half of the frame. Lateral raises build the part that actually widens it.
