No one questioned whether a 17-year-old’s shoulders were “ready.” The assumption was simple: a young body, exposed to proportional demands, adapts. Hard. That’s not dated thinking; it’s basic physiology.

The Great Vanishing: Fear Over Progression

So what changed? Three forces collided:

  • Litigation culture. In the ’80s and ’90s, playgrounds got neutered. Tall structures were lowered, hard surfaces replaced with rubber, and any station where a child might support their full body weight - including dip bars - was yanked. Monkey bars barely survived. Dip bars? Extinct.

The real variable isn’t the dip itself. It’s the bridge between zero and full bodyweight. A kid doesn’t need to do a full-range, feet-off-the-floor dip on day one. They need a progression - a series of steps that lets their joints and nervous system adapt at their own speed. That’s where the magic is.

How to Bring Dips Back, Kid-First

  2. Use bands or foot assistance. Loop a resistance band under the knees or feet to offset body weight. It reduces the load at the bottom, where most kids lose control. As strength improves, use a lighter band. No ego - just good mechanics through a full range of motion.
  3. Lower the bars, or raise the athlete. Adult dip stations are often too tall for a young trainee, forcing a cramped, unsafe path. Look for a station with adjustable height settings.
