I've seen lifters make faster progress on their heavy weighted dips by adding one 15-minute endurance session per week than by adding more weight to their bar. The endurance work improved their technique, their joint health, and their ability to recover between heavy sessions.

The Protocol That Works

Twice per week, perform the following:

  1. Set a timer for 15 minutes.
  2. At the start of each minute, perform 15-20 strict dips.

If 15 reps is too easy at first, go to 20. If 15 is too hard, reduce to 10 and build up. The key is consistency, not heroics.

This protocol trains your body to maintain quality movement under accumulating fatigue. It develops the triceps endurance that carries over to every other pressing movement. And it builds a work capacity that translates directly to real-world fitness-the ability to sustain output when it matters.

After eight weeks of this approach, my own max set went from 25 to 48 reps. My overhead press felt stronger. My shoulders stopped clicking during warm-ups. And I developed a confidence that heavy singles never gave me: the knowledge that I could maintain quality long after fatigue set in.

What This Means for Your Training

Endurance-oriented training aligns with that goal more directly than maximal strength work ever could.

The dip demands full range of motion, control through the eccentric, and stability at the bottom position. These are qualities that degrade under fatigue. By training specifically for endurance, you're forcing your body to maintain quality when it wants to cheat.

And the surprising truth: high-rep dip training actually builds significant strength in the 5-10 rep range over time. The carryover is real, because you've built a base of muscular control and joint integrity that heavy work alone never provides.

Train Without Limits

I'm not here to tell you to abandon heavy work. There's a place for it. But if your dip training consists only of heavy sets with long rest, you're leaving adaptation on the table.

Add one endurance session per week. Fifteen minutes. High reps. Short rest. Watch what happens to your shoulders, your work capacity, and your ability to train consistently.

The grind isn't about perfection. It's about showing up often enough that your body has no choice but to adapt. And dip endurance work, done consistently, provides that adaptation faster than almost any upper-body movement I've studied.
