Dips Were a Core Exercise Before Crunches Took Over
Most lifters file dips under chest and triceps. That label misses half the story. A strict dip forces your trunk to hold a braced, neutral position while your arms and shoulders move through a full range. The Trunk Resists Movement Before It Creates It
Your trunk muscles transfer force and resist unwanted motion. When you squat, press overhead, or carry something heavy, the core keeps your ribs and pelvis stacked. Crunches train the trunk to flex. A loaded dip demands something different.
In a dip, your entire lower body hangs below your shoulders. At the bottom, gravity pulls the lumbar spine toward extension and the hips toward a swing. The abdominals, obliques, and deep stabilizers fire hard just to keep the line from breaking.

Parallel Bars Were Core Equipment First

Gymnasts used support holds, L-sits, and dips to teach the body to stay tight while the arms moved. The trunk had to remain rigid or the movement collapsed. Coaches and lifters later refiled the dip as an upper-body press and handed core work to floor exercises. That created a gap: the loaded anti-extension skill got separated from the pressing work that requires it.
What a Strict Dip Demands From Your Trunk
At the top of a dip, your shoulders are pressed down, your ribs sit over your pelvis, and your legs hang straight or slightly bent. Lowering shifts your torso forward a few degrees, bends your elbows, and loads the chest, triceps, and front delts.
The core's job is to keep the hips and ribs from separating. If the low back arches, you lose position. If the hips kick to one side, the obliques have to correct it. The anti-extension demand is high because gravity pulls the lower body into an arch while the upper body presses. The anti-lateral flexion demand shows up the moment fatigue makes your hips shift. The result is a full-torso brace held while the upper body produces force. That combination leaves your midsection feeling worked in a way short floor crunches do not.
Dips Versus Planks: The Moving Load
Planks are useful. They teach a neutral spine in a horizontal position and build endurance in the anterior chain. Dips add what planks cannot: a moving load. You keep your core engaged while your arms press, your body lowers, and the load shifts. That is the difference between holding a static position and controlling one through movement. It transfers to heavy pressing, climbing, and any task where force moves through a braced trunk. Planks have their place. Don't expect the plank to prepare you for the specific demand of a strict dip.

Start with standard strict dips. Once you can do three clean sets of five to ten, add tempo work: lower for three seconds, pause for one, press. Then move to knee tuck dips, where you bring both knees toward your chest at the top and lower while holding that position. The L-sit dip is the advanced version: extend both legs straight in front and keep them there for every rep. Weighted strict dips come after you own ten clean bodyweight reps. Added load forces the trunk to brace harder with every rep.
A 10-Minute Dip-Core Session
Set a timer for ten minutes.
- Start with two rounds of a 30-second support hold: ribs down, shoulders active, legs together. Rest 15 seconds between rounds.
- Move to three sets of five strict dips with a three-second lower. Rest as needed.
- Finish with two sets of eight knee tuck raises on the dip bars. If you can hold a clean L-sit for ten seconds, end with that.
