Translation: your front delt and rotator cuff take a beating. Meanwhile, your triceps stop working as hard because the leverage shifts. You end up with less muscle activation and more joint stress-a losing trade.

  • The fix: Keep your elbows at roughly a 45-degree angle from your torso. Not fully tucked, not flared out. This balances load across your chest, triceps, and shoulders.

The research on scapular position during pressing movements is consistent: keeping your shoulder blades slightly retracted and depressed creates more room for your tendons to move. You don’t need to squeeze them like you’re holding a pencil-just pull them down and back before you start, and hold that position through every rep.

The Eccentric Drop: Why Gravity Isn’t Your Friend

One of the most common things I see: someone jumps up to the top of a dip, then lets themselves drop straight down. Controlled? No. Fast and bouncy? Yes. That uncontrolled descent is where the damage happens.

A 2020 study looked at tempo and joint loading during dips. They found that uncontrolled eccentrics increased peak compressive forces at the shoulder by nearly 40% compared to a controlled three-second descent. And here’s the kicker-the muscle activation was the same. So you’re getting zero extra benefit for way more joint stress.
